Grace O'Malley

Born in 1530 in County Mayo, Ireland, Grace was born the daughter of a sea captain.

Fearless in battle, she soon aquired a fleet of ships, several islands and
5 castles around Clew Bay, on west coast of Ireland.

Captured by Sir Richard Bingham when she was age 56, Grace was sentenced to hang for her piratical crimes. She was spared at the last moment when her son-in-law offered himself as a hostage and promised she would no not return to piracy. The offer was accepted but Bingham was responsible forcing her into poverty and
plotting the murder of her eldest son.

Grace O'Malley died in 1603 at the age of 73 while at her home in Rockfleet Castle. She was subsequently buried at Clare Island Abbey in a tomb bearing her family crest.
